Todo app: sessions, forms & CSRF
Follow an authenticated application through session loading, CSRF validation, todo mutations and rendered forms.
Build and run
Requires Java 21+, Clojure CLI and the runtime named below. The example pins the compiler that supports native ^:async and await. Run these commands in a separate terminal from other examples.

Use the application
Open http://127.0.0.1:6464/login and use the example credentials admin / password. Add a todo, toggle it, upload through the provided form and log out. TODO_USER and TODO_PASSWORD override the credentials; PORT and HOSTNAME override the listener. GET /health.txt returns ok; GET /static/css/app.css serves the stylesheet.
For Deno use deno install then bb run-deno. After installing its JavaScript dependencies, Node uses bb run-node. The local .npmrc resolves the @jsr package aliases imported by middleware. bb deno-serve builds the Fetch-only entry.
Follow authentication and a mutation
- The session wrapper reads the cookie and supplies
:sessionto the handler. - A successful login responds with updated session data and a redirect. The session wrapper writes that data and emits the session cookie.
- Rendered forms include an anti-forgery field. Protected POST handlers receive the decoded token only after parameter middleware has read the submitted form.
- Anti-forgery validation precedes a todo mutation. The handler updates example state and returns a response; response middleware saves session changes and formats headers.
- Logout clears the session, invalidating the corresponding cookie/store entry.

State and worker count
Sessions and todos in this example live in process memory. They disappear on restart and are not shared between processes. Deno defaults to one worker for this reason; DENO_JOBS increases workers, but each has independent state. Do not treat an atom or the default session store as shared persistent storage.
Learn from rejected requests
Use the browser's rendered form for a valid mutation. A direct POST that lacks the form's CSRF token should be rejected rather than modifying todos. A session cookie identifies session data; it is not the CSRF token. Inspect the response's redirect separately from the next GET performed by the browser.
Exercises
Add a field to a todo form, render it through a Hiccup text node, and preserve it in the mutation handler. Add a filter route that uses query parameters without mutating state. To add persistence, replace the storage operation in business logic and retain the same Ring request/response contract.
